BitTorrent introduces new streaming technology

BitTorrent has just released a new web-based live streaming technology called BitTorrent Live.  This new protocol has been years in the making, and promises to deliver high quality video streams with less stress on the infrastructure of the internet.

With current live streams, the more people who try to watch at the same time, the more congested the networks become.  And of course smooth playback becomes difficult to achieve.  This new technology from BirTorrent turns that on its head, as the streams become more reliable as more people join and watch the video.

“It’s based on the principles of the BitTorrent protocol. And it’s designed to make real-time reporting, and open expression available to all: eliminating bandwidth, cost, and infrastructure as broadcast barriers,” according to BitTorrent Inc.’s Justin Knoll. “The more people who tune in, the more resilient your stream will be.”

This new technology is designed to make broadcasting live streams available for anyone who has the program.  Viewing and sending video does require installing BitTorrent Live in your computer, and at the moment there are no mobile applications available.
