BitTorrent Traffic drops sharply in US but only minimally in EU

Trends analysis company Sandvine has just published their latest 'Global Internet Phenomena' report which monitors developing and emerging developments in the world of Internet usage patterns.

Interestingly enough with regard to US traffic BitTorrent usage has experienced a sharp decline n the US bringing the percentage of overall usage attributable to BitTorrent traffic down to only 7.39 % of total usage.

Other trends include the continued growth in YouTube traffic and the now familiar dominance of NetFlix , with the full table (courtesy of Sandvine) looking like this.

The European Union however paints a different picture with overall file sharing traffic dropping from 21.5% to 20.2% constituting only a very minor decline.

One of the major trends identified in the European Union is the rapidly increasing percentage share by Netflix who only launched their service in Europe in January 2012. It's not available right across Europe but in certain European countries it accounted for 20% of all traffic and by way of comparison it took Netflix four years to reach that same level of market penetration in the US. So it would seem that Netflix is set for dominance in Europe following the trend set in the US, albeit more quickly.
