Blu-ray 3-D movie market matures - but still luxury item

Research company IHS iSuppli has released a report on 3D Blu-ray movies and concludes that market for these movies is maturing. The 3D movie format has come on the market in 2010 and in that year  37 3-D titles were released. This year the amount has seen a big increase and currently about 200 3-D movies are available in the United States. The majority of the 3-D movies are currently released by major movie studios, but iSuppli expects that the coming years the majority of these movies will come from independent film makers.

That's because the major studios all rushed into the 3-D format after the success of 'Avatar' but they are now changing their strategy and will, likely, from now on only release major blockbusters in 3-D and convert older success movies from 2-D to the 3-D.

Although the market for 3-D movies is growing, it only makes up for a  small part of all movie sales. The 3-D movies make up about 8% of the total physical video business. But the format will stay, according to iSuppli, and this year can be considered the year where BD-3-D becomes an established product instead of the novelty it could be considered before.

According to the researchers because the format could  help to revive the sales of movies on discs and because it's a way for movie studios to ask premium prices for their movies.
