Camera makers aiming for budget shoppers

Camera manufacturers used the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas to announce and launch numerous point-and-shoot digital cameras that are dropping in price but packing in more features and higher megapixels.

Almost all digital cameras have at least 10-megapixels today, so consumers should pay attention to the added features included. Ranging from waterproof and durable cameras to cameras able to send and share pictures easily, manufacturers are looking to create a digital camera for everyone.

During CES, The Casio Exilim TRYX digital camera gained immediate attention with its unique ability to pivot and double as its own tripod -- and includes a fixed wide-angle lens.

Also in Las Vegas, Kodak showed off the EasyTouch Mini digital camera ($99.95 MSRP) aimed for younger users looking to capture digital pictures. The camera includes a front-panel mirror so self-portraits can be captured in an easier manner, as the company attempts to cash in on tweens.

There is an ongoing battle between digital camera makers trying to battle the increasing number of smartphones sold to even younger users. Smartphones are able to take pictures and record video with higher resolutions, so camera makers continually look to adjust to changing consumer demands.

Samsung and Eye-Fi both had live demos of new digital cameras able to beam photos to a nearby smartphone or notebook -- offering a creative, fun way to share pictures. Meanwhile, virtually all digital cameras unveiled include HD video recording, except for several bare-bone, entry-level models.

The $100 price point was first met by a small number of camera makers, but it's now possible to find a wide variety of digital cameras for less than $100. Olympus, General Electric, Kodak, Casio, Canon, Fuji, and HP all have digital cameras available for prices starting as low as $70.

In 2011, the demand for cheaper digital cameras with more features will open the door to viable choices from $70 all the way up to $300+.  Expect to see even more features available, and don't be afraid to shop around and look for the camera that best suits your needs.
