During the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) underway in Las Vegas, Sony debuted the VAIO W Series Eco netbook.
The VAIO W Series Eco is 7.07-in. x 10.54-in. x 1.08 in. (HWD) and weighs just 2.93 pounds using a normal battery.
To try and market to the "eco-friendly crowd," around 23% of the plasic netbook chassis is derived from recycled CDs and DVDs. The CD and DVD manufacturing waste is mixed with a custom-made polycarbonate/ABS resin that has been designed to provide a more environmentally friendly casing.
The hardware specs include a 10.1-inch widescreen HD display (1366x768 resolution), Intel Atom Pineview N450 CPU running at 1.66GHz, Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics, 1GB DDR2 memory and a 250GB hard drive.
Sony claims Intel's Pine Trail platform helps deliver 8 hours of battery life when on default settings.
The Japanese electronics company is shipping the notebook in a "stylist reusable" carrying case manufactured from recycled plastic bottles.
The Sony VAIO W Series Eco netbook available in February, with an expected $480 MSRP. The company made the eco-friendly netbook and all other VAIO W products available for pre-order.
Sony's VAIO W line of netbooks, according to the company, were designed for people looking to browse the Internet, check e-mail, social networking, and other basic functional tasks.
Eco-friendly products are expected to be a big part of CES this year, as both manufacturers and consumers look to go green.
