CES 2010: Vuzix demos Wrap 920AR video glasses

Vuzix debuted the Wrap 920AR eyewear during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, as augmented reality is expected to become a popular technology in the living room.

The Vuzix product is designed to offer a 1,504 x 480 side-by-side image in 3D, aimed at providing characters to "jump out of the TV."  The headset provides a 752Hx480W resolution, and connects via USB.

wrap920ar_400x180"The Wrap 920AR offers the world's only sunglass styled Augmented Reality experience," said Paul Travers, Vuzix CEO, in a statement.  "This state-of-the-art video eyewear, offers consumers an AR solution only available in handheld devices to date, merging the real world with the digital in a pair of glasses makes for world changing experiences from industry to gaming.  With the Wrap 920 AR, Vuzix brings exclusive new capabilities to the consumer."

The Vuzix Wrap 920AR is scheduled for release during Q2 this year, with a $799.99 MSRP.

3D technology has been in the spotlight as manufacturers create 3DTVs and 3D movies, but 3D headsets connected to PCs are nothing new.  I remember seeing solutions to create 3D images for video games at least four years back -- but it hasn't been until recently that consumers have been informed about the technology.

The Vuzix Wrap 920AR seems like a step in the right direction, but that high MSRP has me hesitant to believe consumers will want to make such a financial investment.  By the time CES 2011 rolls around hopefully the price of the Wrap 920AR will drop enough for consumer ownership to rise.
