CES 2010: XStreamHD finally approaches release

XStreamHD is finally poised to release a working product later this year, after several years of anticipation, failed launches and a last-minute press conference cancellation.

The XStreamHD platform is based on an HD Media Server device that has 1TB of storage, with satellite HD Media Receivers installed on each TV.  XStreamHD will then offer on-demand video content directly to consumers, providing 1080p high-definition and 7.1 Dolby surround sound.

The XStreamHD technology has been widely discussed for more than one year now, but consumers are beginning to get a bit impatient.  I first experienced XStreamHD in 2008 -- and applauded the basis of the technology -- but was worried when it didn't appear the company had working prototypes on a wide-scale.

ServerThe company showed a working prototype at CES 2008, but canceled its CES 2009 press conference for unknown reasons.  XStreamHD then said it would release a product in October 2009, but that was pushed back.

"XStreamHD will provide consumers with an unmatched HD entertainment experience," said George Gonzalez, XStreamHD Founder and CEO, in a statement.  "There is really a strong buzz in the enthusiast community about our launch, with any asking to be among the first to receive their XStreamHD units."

The XStreamHD is scheduled for release on April 30, but is now available for pre-order, the company announced during CES.

I'm pleased to see XStreamHD finally has a working product available for pre-order, but I doubt many people are willing to fork over a deposit to the company.
