Chrome blocking major torrent sites

Starting today, July 10th, the Chrome browser has started blocking many of the most prominent torrent sites on the net.  The reason given is that the sites might contain harmful programs.

Chrome stops the connection to the site and issues this warning:

“The site ahead contains harmful programs.  Attackers on xxx.xxx might attempt to trick you into installing programs that harm your browsing experience (for example, by changing your homepage or showing extra ads on sites you visit).”

The list of blocked sites includes Torrentz, KickassTorrents, ExtraTorrent and RARBG.  The owners of the sites have no idea what has caused this sudden change in behavior by Chrome, and there is no explanation forthcoming from Google.    The blockade is not complete however, as many proxy sites, such as torrentz-proxy.com still work with no issues.

If you run into this problem, other browsers  like Firefox, Pale Moon and IE still work for these sites, or you can disable the malware warnings within Chrome, though this is a bit drastic and not recommended.
