Cisco launches touchscreen Flip SlideHD

Cisco recently unveiled the Flip SlideHD camera that offers up to four hours of HD video support as the networking giant looks to move further into the consumer gadget market.

Earlier Flip models were based on easy-to-use video recorders, but the Flip SlideHD enhances ease of use and sharing video.  The video recording device has a 3-inch LCD, speakers, 16GB storage, touchscreen, integrated video sharing software, and full 1080p HD support.

Up to 12 hours of standard definition movies and images can be stored on the SlideHD, and recharging takes place by plugging the device into a USB cable.

"Since its launch less than three years ago, Flip video has changed the way  the world captures and shares video," said Jonathan Kaplan, Cisco Consumer Products VP, in a note.  "The addition of the exciting new SlideHD to the Flip family allows consumers to take their life with them wherever they go and easily share those experiences with everyone around them."

The Cisco Flip SlideHD is available for $279.99.

Cisco picked up Flip maker Pure Digital in an effort to branch into new revenue streams away from consumer and enterprise networking products.  The $590 million deal was first announced last March, with some analysts concerned Cisco would be unable to continue to help the video electronics product line.

Although initial doubt surrounded Cisco when the company first purchased Pure Digital, I think Cisco is taking the right steps to ensure the Flip brand will continue to develop well.

Cisco is also expected to add Wi-Fi to certain upcoming Flip camcorder models that will be released later in the year.
