Company announces algorithm for more vibrant colors on Blu-ray

The American company Folded Space today announced new encoding and decoding algorithms which, according to the company, should result in more vibrant colors on Blu-ray movies. On its website the company explains how original 4K or 1080p content is transformed to a letterbox version where extra data is added in the bottom and top bar.

During authoring of the movie black bar overlays are applied, during playback the data stored in the top and bottom bars helps in providing an improved image over traditional Blu-ray content.

The company is able to use 12-bits per color instead of 8-bits per color on regular Blu-ray. Newer displays and Blu-ray players with the decoding algorithm can then restore a 12-bit equivalent of the original image in support of greater color range of the latest generation HD and Ultra HD displays.

The company states it plans on licensing the encoding algorithm to software partners free of charge as it wants  to "stimulate deep color, high dynamic range content production as soon as possible while licensing the decoding algorithm to player and display partners for a modest fee".
