Company develops magnetic headphone jack

A startup wants to make it easier to plug in audio jacks by using a magnetic connector. The method works with two accessories, a MagJack for the audio-in and a MagKap for the mini-jack.

The developers of the MagZet project mention several advantages of using magnets, users can hook up their headphones easier in the dark and the magnetic connector prevent the plug and input from wearing out. The magnetic connector should also protect devices again falling and other accidents that can happen when accidentally pulling cables.

The MagZet works with all existing 3.5mm mini-jack connectors and inputs. It's unclear what kind of influence the magnetic connector has on audio quality. The project for the audio variant of Apple's MagSafe is funded through Kickstarter. The team behind MagZet hopes to be able to ship the first bundles of MagJack and MagKap in December this year. Early adopters will have to pay about $20.
