Consumer organisation: Microsoft marketed Windows 10 too aggressively

Microsoft has been too aggressive in trying to convince users to upgrade to Windows 10, according to the Dutch consumer organisation 'Consumentenbond'. The organisation argues that users themselves have to decide whether they want to upgrade or not. Especially the decision from Microsoft to make Windows 10 a recommended update instead of an optional update is criticized by 'Consumentenbond'.

Because Windows 10 is now a recommended update, it's more likely that users unintentionally and unwanted start the Windows 10 update procedure, according to 'Consumentenbond'. The organisation also criticizes the many popups asking the users to upgrade and also states the privacy of users is in danger. It also argues that Windows 10 is a privacy threat because it asks for, and sends to Microsoft, (too much) private data.

The consumer organisation therefore recommends users to change the default settings for improved privacy protection.

Microsoft offers a free upgrade to Windows 10 for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users till the 29th of July this year. Meanwhile about 300 million devices actively run the OS.
