Crash Internet Explorer 11 by browsing a website

Browser compatibility is something we take for granted when viewing most websites.  When an issue does occur, it is usually a minor inconvenience such as where text or an object does not display properly on the webpage.  What we do not expect is for the web browser to crash out and that is exactly what is happening here on Myce where various readers have contacted us about Internet Explorer 11 crashing out while browsing our articles and reviews.

It did not take long to reproduce the issue – I launched Internet Explorer 11 and within seconds of viewing our homepage, the browser crashed out, coincidentally showing an appropriate ad from a rival:

This issue affects Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 all running Internet Explorer 11.  Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and mobile browsers are not affected.  We have not tried earlier versions of Internet Explorer.

From further testing with a debugger, this issue is caused by one of our advertising partners as Internet Explorer 11 has no problem opening our webpages with an ad-blocker or an Internet Security package that filters advertising such as the Anti-Banner feature in Kaspersky.

Based on a process of elimination, we suspect that the Teads Video Advertising is causing the browser to crash as we were not able to reproduce the crash with its advertising filtered out.  Similarly, the browser does not crash when its video ads are not served such as for users in certain regions.

To reproduce this issue – Launch Internet Explorer 11, disable any ad-blocker and browse several stories and reviews from our homepage myce.wiki.  This issue is still active at this time of publishing.  If the browser does not crash after about 10 pages, then it’s likely the affected advertising is not served in your region or that the issue has since been fixed.

Until this issue is fixed, we recommend browsing Myce in an alternative browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Edge, which are not affected.
