Dell teases a 10mm Adamo laptop

Dell may be looking to revamp its luxury Adamo line with a notebook that's thinner than its predecessors and the competition.

The company has launched a Web site teasing that so-called Adamo XPS, with the "XPS" handle taken from Dell's mid-range notebook and desktop line. The site has no details except a tagline that reads, "Crafted to fall in love with at 9.99 mm." That's likely a measurement of the laptop's thickness, making it roughly 50 percent thinner than previous Adamo netbooks and the competing MacBook Air.

PC World reports that the Adamo XPS is being shown as a "design concept," so it's not clear whether it'll turn into an actual product. The Web site includes a sign-up form to receive news about the product, so perhaps Dell is looking to gauge interest from consumers and the tech press before moving forward.

That wouldn't surprise me, given the lukewarm response to Dell's original Adamo notebooks. Initially priced at $2,699 and $1,999, they were questioned for having too much flash and not enough substance to justify their high price tags. In July, Dell scraped $400 and $500 off the cost of the higher and lower-tiered models, respectively.

I'm not sure how the Adamo has performed after those price cuts, but I still don't think the race to be thinnest is a worthwhile endeavor, especially when the result only packs between 2 GB and 4 GB of RAM and a 128 GB solid state drive. Granted, specs aren't everything, and there's something to be said for superior design, but I'd rather laptop makers be focused on comfortable keyboards and smooth trackpads and durable construction. Only then does aesthetics begin to matter.
