Development of online LibreOffice version started - to compete with Google Docs and Office 365

The companies Collaborate and IceWarp have started development of a version of LibreOffice that runs in the browser. The open source Office suite has to become an alternative to proprietary web applications like Google Docs and Office 365 from Microsoft.

Collabora, that offers paid support for LibreOffice, has announced it will work together with IceWarp on a 'cloud version' of LibreOffice. The companies work together with the developers of LibreOffice that are organized in The Document Foundation. The resulting LibreOffice should get full online edit and layout capabilities without requiring the end-user to install additional software.

The initiative should make LibreOffice a free alternative for providers of proprietary Office suites that run as a cloud service in the browser such as Google Docs and Microsoft Office 365. An important requirement will be that LibreOffice can handle the different variants of the Open Document Format file format.

It's unknown when we can expect the first release of LibreOffice Online. The Document Foundation is also working on a version of LibreOffice for Android.
