DivX 10 released - doubles video quality with H.265/HEVC

During the IFA in Berlin DivX 10 was unveiled announcing support for H.265 or HEVC  requiring half the storage space for the same level of  video quality your're currently used to.

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) , also called the H.265 standard, is the successor of the H.264 codec. H.264 is currently one of the most used codecs for video encoding. The new H.265 is an huge improvement over H.264 and is  said to double the data compression ratio. This means that a 10 MB video in H.264 would be 5 MB in H.265 without any degradation of the video quality.

DivX 10 has the following features:

  • New DivX HEVC profiles supported across DivX Converter, DivX Player and DivX Web Player
  • Real-time decoding of HEVC video up to 1080p on Intel Core i5
  • Encoding of HEVC HM11 video up to 1080p with AAC, MP3, or AC3 audio
  • Optimized playback with reverse/forward seek, pause, and play
  • Efficient HEVC streaming in the browser with DivX Web Player
  • Powerful MKV container to deliver subtitles, chapters, and compatibility with existing toolsets
  • High-quality DivX and MKV video for viewing on DivX supported computers and consumer electronics devices
  • Creation of MP4 video for playback on iOS
  • Available in 11 languages, including new support for Italian, Korean and Russian

The company behind DivX, Rovi also announces that it will  be showcasing its end-to-end HEVC solution line at the IFA.  This includes encoding SDKs for professional content creators and DivX Video Service. With this service it's possible to add Digital Rights Management (DRM) to DivX movies and to make them easily available on different platforms.
