Dropbox users lose files due to bug - can you trust a cloud service with your files?

An unknown amount of Dropbox users has lost files due to an bug in the desktop application of the cloud storage service. Affected users were those using an older version of the desktop app with the feature Selective Sync changed.

Dropbox has informed the affected users and the company states only a limit amount of its users have suffered from the bug. The problem occurred when the desktop app was closed or restarted while the Selective Sync feature was changed. The Selective Sync feature gives users the possibility to select specific folders that should be synchronized with the computer. Several Dropbox users reportedly have lost years of data stored on Dropbox.

The company behind the cloud storage service states it has tried to recover the lost files but it's unclear whether the company succeeded in retrieving the files. According to Dropbox the bug is now fixed  and the company promises to do additional tests to prevent this from happening again. Victims of the bug have received a year free of use of Dropbox Pro, which gives them additional storage space.
