Often the Online Pass is also required for multi-player functionality. By entering a code that comes with the game the Pass is activated and tied to an user account.

If the game is sold, the new owner will not be able to use the additional features the Online Pass enabled. In pratice this means that the multi-player functionality can't be used. It's possible to unlock this again by purchasing a new Online Pass for the game. The price differences per game but e.g. a new Online Pass for  Battlefield 3 on the Xbox 360 costs around $10,-.

Now EA has decided to put this to end and the company promises that you don't need an Online Pass for any future EA game.
