EchoStar partners with XStreamHD for HD video on demand

Satellite operator EchoStar has signed a contract with XStreamHD to offer full high-definition movie and TV content in the living room.

Partnerships in the home entertainment industry have expanded in recent years now that the market has become so fractured and cluttered with companies.  The ability to share content using fixed satellite service (FSS) hasn't been too popular so far, but could change once the technology develops.

"EchoStar is pleased to support new HD content services, like XStreamHD, utilizing our available FSS capacity," said Dean Olmstead, EchoStar Satellite Services President, in a statement.  "We look forward to playing a vital role in the launch of XStreamHD's entertainment service."

As part of MyCE's 2010 CES coverage, a preview and additional details of the XStreamHD platform were released.  The media server includes 1TB storage, 1080p support, 7.1 Dolby surround sound, and the use of HD Media receivers on every TV.  The unit has been in development for a few years -- and was scheduled for release on April 30, but was delayed. It should be available sometime in 2010.

Movie rentals will cost around $4.99, and specific pricing information will be released closer to launch.  Customers who pre-order the XStreamHD Fast Start package that includes a satellite receiver, media server, remote and HDMI cables for $399 will also receive five free movie rentals.

This is a solid move by EchoStar now that the company continues to look for ways to keep up in a changing home entertainment market.  Satellite companies have been slower to adopt HD, while cable companies continue to embrace streaming services, HD, and 3D content.

If XStreamHD is unable to release a product sometime soon, this long-term contract with EchoStar may end up being useless.  Products in the tech world have a very short lifespan, but face even more pressure after years of delay and disappointment.
