European Commission rules adblock detection is not allowed

The European Commission has stated that trying to detect whether an user is using an adblocker is illegal. The statement was made as part of an answer to a question of the CEO of privacy watchdog Think Privacy, Alexander Hanff.

Hanff asked the European Commision whether it's illegal to detect if an user is using an adblocker. The European Commission replied that such is not allowed.

Just like how websites have to ask permission for cookies, sites also have to inform users and ask for permission before detection can take place. Hanff is planning to start a lawsuit against several member states of the European Union based on the ruling.

Additionally he also plans to make a website that contains a list of all websites that detect adblockers.
