"Expect many more failing updates from Microsoft"

We should expect more failing updates from Microsoft, according to Windows watcher Larry Seltzer of ZDNet. According to Seltzer updates to complex products like Windows, Office and Exchange with a large diverse user group will continue to cause issues.

"There are just too many configurations and third-party products for Microsoft to test", the Windows watcher writes. "The update processes for Windows, Office and Exchange have become too complex and unwieldy. There's little Microsoft can do about it in the short term", according to Seltzer. "They brought it on themselves, mostly by having excessively long support lifecycles", he added.

On long term he expects that as soon as all software is cloud based updates are silently rolled out and users don't even notice them anymore, except for a changed version number. Till then Microsoft and users have to deal with the current way of releasing updates and expect more issues and withdrawn updates, Seltzer concludes.

The amount of failing updates Microsoft released lately is worrisome. Last week Microsoft withdrew an update for Windows 7 and an update to Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP3. We also reported  update KB3002339 for Microsoft Visual Studio was buggy.

Microsoft had to withdraw even more updates this year, in August an update to Windows 8.1 caused boot failures, in September the company withdrew an update for Lync and in November an SSL update caused issues.
