Facebook counters ad-blockers on their site

Facebook is taking a stand against ad-blockers, and they have developed techniques to bypass most of the current ad-blocking programs available to their users.  This means they will serve up ads regardless of whether you have an ad-blocker or not.

“Facebook is ad-supported. Ads are a part of the Facebook experience; they’re not a tack on,” said Andrew Bosworth, Facebook’s vice president of engineering for advertising and pages.

Ad-blocking has become more widespread over the last few years, with most people adopting them to prevent disruptive ads that dominate sites, or slow down load times.  But malware protection is an increasing concern, and ad-blockers help prevent malware infected ads from even being seen.

Facebook will benefit, of course, but most of their income from ads comes from mobile users, and they do not use ad-blockers as much as their members accessing the site from pc's.  Facebook insists they are making this change on principle, wishing to lead the discussion to stop ad-blocking before it makes a serious impact on ad generated revenue on the internet.

If this irritates those who deliberately chose not to see ads, this seems to be of little concern to Facebook. Personally, I'd just as soon see Facebook crumble and whither away, but this change in their advertising tactics will not achieve that.  Too many will simply accept the ads, as part of the cost of going to that site.
