Finis unveils MP3 player for swimmers, triathletes

Finis has unveiled its latest MP3 player designed for athletes and active people, the XtreaMP3.1G unit, which is designed to withstand rugged environments regular MP3 players normally cannot endure.

The XtreaMP3.1G has been designed for swimmers, triathletes (swim, bike, and run), cyclists, kayakers, surfers, and others who are likely to be rough on MP3 players.  The device itself is both waterproof and sweatproof, with 1GB of internal storage.  Furthermore, Finis is shipping it with an arm strap — no need to spend $20+ for a sportband — and also includes waterproof earbuds.

According to Finis, XtreaMP3.1G is waterproof to a maximum depth of 15 feet, and is powered using a digital control panel “with shuffle, pause, resume, next song/previous song and volume control functions,” along with volume up/down buttons.

Finis-XtreaMP3

“We created the XtreaMP3.1G specifically for extreme water sport enthusiasts so they could enjoy their favorite tunes while pursuing their favorite sport,” said John Mix, Finis President, in a statement.  “Our XtreaMP3’s water proof design, comfortable arm strap and durability makes it the perfect accessory for a multitude of sports year around from surfing, windsurfing and triathlons during the warm months to skiing during the cooler months.”

The Finis XtreaMP3.1G is now available with a $149.99 MSRP.

The price tag is steep for a 1GB MP3 player, but you must remember that it’s designed for a niche market of consumers who are rough on gadgets.  I can’t count how many MP3 players and earbuds I’ve damaged and broken over the years while running, lifting weights at the gym, cycling, or hiking.  Athletes have longed for an MP3 player they can take with them and abuse — while keeping the Apple iPod, Microsoft Zune, or other main MP3 player — safe at home, away from harm.

I previously reviewed the Finis SwiMP3v2 MP3 player here on MyCE, and found both advantages and disadvantages to using the MP3 player.  I look forward to seeing how Finis’ latest product works out in the pool, on the road, and in the woods.

  • The MP3 player is a portable device for playing back music files, and some more advanced portable media players also play video. Because of this, MP3 Players can be extremely small and most of them have no moving parts, which makes them perfect for listening music while sporting, or on the road.More about this
