Satellite operator SES has announced that the first commercial and unencrypted Ultra HD channel becomes available in September. The operator will broadcast through the Astra 1 satellite and the first channel will be Pearl.tv, a German home shopping channel.
Until now the Astra1 satellite only broadcasted a demo channel in Ultra HD quality but that will change in September when Pearl.tv will start to try to convince TV shoppers to buy their products in Ultra HD. The station claims to be the first commercial TV provider to broadcast a free to air Ultra HD channel.
Pearl.tv is mainly intended for an audience in coutnries such as Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The channel was also one of the first home shopping channels to broadcast in HD quality. Besides the Ultra HD channel, the company will continue to broadcast in SD and HD as well.
