The software is a project of the developer Jonathan Thomas who started the project in 2008 with the goal to bring a good video editor to Linux. In the meantime a lot of changed and Jonathan has been joined by a couple other developers. Together they make Openshot, which is, besides Linux, also available on Mac and Windows. They describe the software as "a free, open-source, non-linear video editor."
