So far it was impossible to to run homebrew games, third party applications and emulators on the Nintendo 3DS. It appears this has changed now with the exploit from the French Jordan "Smealum" Rabet who published the exploit on the GBATemp forum. The creator promises to release the exploit, which has received the name SSSPwn, on the 22nd of November.

The hacker has already published some details on the exploit, which works by clicking a link and then entering the firmware version of the 3DS. The exploit also requires the games Cubic Ninja which was released in 2011 and hardly available anymore, especially since the news about the exploit.

After installing the exploit, 3DS users will get a Homebrew Channel. Homebrew applications can be run from a SD card when named boot.3dsx. The hack is comparable to the Wii hack, according to the developers, but they stress that the hack doesn't allow to run backups or pirated games on the handheld console. Nevertheless, it's likely that Nintendo will render the hack unusable with a next firmware update.
