Game console battle intensifies with higher features, lower prices

The Nintendo Wii controlled the game console market ahead of the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3, but recent hardware developments and lower prices have led to struggles for Nintendo.

The company's fun and innovative Wiimote caught immediate attention, but the Wii still doesn't have a very deep game catalog -- especially compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Amazon has seen strong interest in the limited edition Xbox 360 250GB Halo: Reach game bundle that is expected to retail for $399.99 and include a silver Xbox 360 260GB Slim, two controllers, Halo: Reach, a Limited Edition Elite Armor Set, Halo Legends episode and a free Halo: Reach headset (wired).

Microsoft also plans to release a new Xbox 360 this fall that includes higher sound quality and better VoIP support, it has been rumored.

Amazon noted interest in the Microsoft bundle, but also confirmed the Sony PlayStation Move Starter Bundle available for the PS3 also saw a significant sales increase. Pre-orders for the PlayStation Move started at $49.99 two months ago. A custom Move Navigation Controller for $29.99 is available -- the bundle includes the controller, PlayStation Eye, and the Sports Champions video game set for Sept. 19.

Meanwhile, the Wii remains the No. 1 game console in the world, but saw a -23% marketshare year-over-year drop, while the PS3 saw a 65% increase and the Xbox 360's control increased 78%.

There will be continued pressure for each company to market their consoles and custom game bundles to consumers. Leading into the 2010 holiday shopping season, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all plan a marketing battle from the beginning.
