Gamers have more often Windows 8 installed than regular users

Windows 8 is popular with gamers as 8.76% of the Steam users are running the operating system. For average computer users Windows 8 has a market share of 2.26%.  Steam conducts a monthly survey to collect data about what kinds of computer hardware and software their customers are using.

Participation in the survey is optional, and anonymous but gives a nice insight in market shares. It reveals that Windows 7 is still by far the most popular operating system, it's used by almost 70% of the gamers.  Only a handful of gamers is still using Windows Vista, nearly 6% is still using it. And Apple is nowhere to be seen as a game platform, all Apple operating systems combined are good for around 4%.

When it comes to hardware, Nvidia and Intel are still strong leaders. Nvdia cards are installed in more than 50% of the gaming rigs, while AMD cards can be found in 34% of the systems. Intel CPUs are used on 73% of the systems and AMD CPUs can be found on 27% of the PCs. Most gamers (29%) use a resolution of 1920x1080 but almost an equal amount (21%) is running at 1366x768.
