Google adds 'Trending' popularity tracker to Chrome Web Store

Google's journey to convert IE and Firefox users to its Chrome browser is never-ending. The company's latest round of improvements focuses on the Chrome Web Store and getting the software offered within to as many people as possible.

Google Product Manager Shannon Guymon touted the changes, which include new app subcategories and a quicker search engine, at the official Chrome blog.

"[App subcategories] allow you to dig deeper into each app category," said Guymon. "For example, in the 'Entertainment' category you can click on the 'Music & Radio' subcategory to only view music related apps."

"Searching for a particular app has also improved. Our search box now sports autocomplete suggestions that guide you to the app or extension you are looking for, faster," she added.

Meanwhile, new app badges added to each listing serve as a visual cue that differentiates between offline and Google+ compatibility. Clicking on the badges leads users to apps that also fall under their respective functionality, Guymon explained.

The company's biggest tweak, however, is a new "Trending" option that informs users about which apps and extensions are hot, and which are not. The view purports to gauge the "temperature" (i.e. download frequency) of software so those searching for a new favorite app can easily find it. Instead of the usual 5-star rating system, here it's just three flames: one is "warm," two is "hot" and three is "on fire."

Bear in mind, it's no review score. Just because an app is "on fire" at the Chrome Web Store doesn't mean it will stoke your interest.
