Google Ads exec: Popularity of adblockers caused by ads with terrible user experience

The popularity of adblockers is caused by annoying advertisements that provide a terrible user experience, according to Google's Senior Vice President Ads and Commerce, Sridhar Ramaswamy. It's the first time someone from Google speaks out about adblocker since Apple's mobile Safari browser supports them.

"The real problem is that ad blockers throw out the baby with the bathwater", according to Ramaswamy. "They make monetization impossible for a whole slew of people."

in an interview with Recode he said that a "terrible user experience" is the cause of the rising popularity of adblockers. He specifically mentions websites where advertisements take over the entire screen.

"We need to recognize, as an industry, that this is something we need to deal with. We need to work together to come up with a definition of what an acceptable ad is and what an acceptable ads program can be", he concludes.
