Google Android headed to GM vehicles

Car maker General Motor and Google are reportedly working together on a new partnership to bring Google's open source software into new GM cars.

The news hasn't been confirmed by GM or Google, but GM officials previously said a new OnStar relaunch would take place sometime soon.  Furthermore, a new Wall Street Journal article indicates that the new duo will "add features to OnStar that consumers could control" using Android-powered phones. GM already is blending technology into vehicle lineups, with the company already dabbling with phone apps.  During CES 2010 earlier in the year, GM showed off a new Android OnStar app designed for Chevrolet Volt owners.  When used, Volt owners are able to monitor the car's battery power when away from the vehicle.

GM is now using OnStar to help attract car buyers back to the company that has struggled over the past few years -- though the company could see 20% marketshare again, in part due to OnStar -- as the company claws back.

Both Ford and Microsoft have seen success with its Sync software technology in newer Ford models -- Sync is aimed at being an interactive entertainment system -- while OnStar offers safety and navigation first, but does include additional features.

Don't be surprised to see more PC companies creating partnerships with auto manufacturers now that drivers want added benefits in their vehicles.  Both Ford and GM are working to enhance connectivity even though the price of these integrated electronics is sliding.
