Google Android powered HDTV in the works

It seemed like only a matter of time, a Google Android-powered HDTV is now being worked on by Sweden's People of Lava TV company.

This is the first time a TV manufacturer has decided to use Android without help, but this still could add even more pressure on Google to begin working directly with manufacturers.  In addition to expected TV features, these new models will also give viewers the ability to use widgets.

Each TV model will ship with a wireless keyboard and mouse so it's easier to navigate through apps.

There has been a larger push to include Internet-based technology in the living room -- with even more PC software and hardware companies switching focus to the living room -- as downloadable apps and other content is expected to help generate new revenue.

"Think of it as a device that provides all the functionality that you would expect from an Android smartphone, combined with the quality and definition you demand of a high-end, full-HD, LED TV set," said Christian Svantesson, People of Lava CEO and co-founder, in a statement.

The company expects to release the first Android-powered 42-inch model this September, while 47-inch and 55-inch models also are in development.  Prices for all three models haven't been released.

I think this is a good step for the TV industry, especially since the Android platform is open source, so developers are able to create new apps without much restriction.  People of Lava plans to offer its own app store to consumers, with developers receiving a slice of the revenue.
