Google employees slightly injured after crash with self-driving car

A Google self-driving car has been involved in a collision with slightly injured for the first time. Three Google employees had a slight whiplash due to the crash. Google claims the accident was not caused by their car.

The collision took place early this month at a crossroads, Chris Urmson of the Google project for self-driving cars writes on Medium. Although the traffic light was green, a row of cars stopped to prevent them from coming to stand still at a congested intersection. The self-driving car of Google, third in line, also stopped but was rammed by another car in the rear. The driver was distracted and did not notice the traffic. He collided with the Google car with 27 km/h (16 mph) .

Although it's not the first time a Google self-driving car is involved in a collision, it is the first time there were injured. Three Google employees had a slight whiplash after the collision, reports the Chicago Tribune. After a visit to the hospital they could go to work the next day. The careless driver complained of pain in his back and neck. Also the front bumper of his car fell off; The Google car was better off, with just a little fender bender.

It is the fifteenth time a Google self-driving car is involved in an accident. According to the search giant  no accident was caused by the self-driving car, the cause was always a human error. At first glance, Google's self-driving cars are more often involved in accidents than other cars, but according to Google that's because about half of the collisions are not reported. In no accident with the self-driving cars the police was required.
