Google Glass Explorer programme ends

Yesterday Google announced via Google+ that it was closing the Google Glass Explorer programme and stopping production.

But this does not necessarily mean the end of Google Glass. The project will now be transferred from Google X (the company's research facility) to another division of Google, and the company says it remains committed to developing future versions of Glass.

Launched in April 2013 at a price of $1500, the Google Glass Explorer programme was always intended as a "kind of open beta" for software developers. The following year it became available to the general public, with some consumers prepared to pay for the privilege of becoming early adopters of the new technology. However many were left disgruntled after discovering that it was far from being a finished product.

There has been no announcement yet of a release date for the next version of Glass, but Google has indicated that we will start to see future versions "when they're ready".

After 19th January 2015 Google will no longer take orders for Glass Explorer, although they say they will continue to support companies already using Glass.
