An upcoming update for Chrome should make the browser consume less RAM memory, Google claims it's able to reduce the memory consumption up to 50% compared to an earlier version. The improvements come with Chrome 55 which is scheduled for December this year.
The Chrome team that works on Google's Javascript engine (V8) writes in a blogpost that websites using a lot of Javascript will consume a lot less RAM memory. As an example the Chrome team mentions websites such as Reddit, Twitter, Youtube and Imgur. In Chrome 54 these websites consume a relative large amount of memory which can cause a slow browsing experience on cheap PCs and laptops.
Google claims that the improvements in Chrome 55 will provide a smoother user experience and components like 'heap memory' consume 50% less memory on average and 'zone memory' consumes less than 40%.
Google also announced it's working on optimizing Chrome for devices with less than 1GB of RAM.
