Google releases Whatsapp competitor, Google Messenger

Google today released a standalone messaging application called Messenger. The app was released to the Play Store today and uses Google's flat and colorful new UI language,  Material Design. Google Messenger appears to be directly targeted to Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp with pretty much the same capabilities. You can send the usual suspects such as audio, pictures and emoji.

The application can be used as the default SMS and MMS app. Whatsapps recently added a read indicator, the app shows two blue check marks when a message is read, Google Messenger doesn't have such a feature. The software is currently available for Android 4.1 and up and can be downloaded here.
