'Google working on 2nd gen Chromecast that streams audio directly to speakers'

Google is working on a new version of its Chromecast HDMI video streaming dongle. According to rumors, posted by the usually reliable 9to5Google, the tech giant is working on adding streaming audio to speakers with the device. The current Chromecast is a small, relative cheap HDMI dongle that makes it easy to stream video and audio to TVs.

The new Chromecast allegedly not only works with a TV but also directly with speakers. This means the Chromecast becomes competitive to similar devices like Apple's Airport Express.

Chromecast Audio should be able to stream to multiple rooms, mirror sound from Chrome or an Android device and should provide high quality output. The new dongle should also work together with streaming audio service Spotify.

The Chromecast dongle should also become available in a new form factor and in three different colors. Google also upgraded the Wifi speed of the device, if the report is correct.

It's expected that the device will be officially revealed on a Google event on the 29th of September, together with a new Nexus 5 and 6.
