Hack makes it possible to download songs from Spotify for free

A Dutch developer has created a Chrome extension that makes it possible to rip music from Spotify. Downloading music through the extension is possible because Spotify doesn't encrypt data in it's web client, in contrary to the desktop client of the popular music streaming service.

The extension is called Downloadify and can be found in the Chrome web store. When the extension is installed users of the web client can download songs by double clicking them. Without the extension this would start streaming a song but with the extension the song is now downloaded instead. The song is downloaded in the MP3 format and to use it's not required to use a paid plan.

The plugin exploits the fact that the web client of Spotify doesn't encrypt music in contrary to the desktop and mobile client. The web client uses HTML 5 to stream the music and currently that format doesn't support Digital Rights Management (DRM).
