HDMI 2.0 released - nearly doubles bandwidth, 4k at 60 fps support

The HDMI forum today announced version 2.0 of the HDMI standard which nearly doubles the available bandwidth and makes 4K content at 60 frames per second possible. The latest High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) version brings the maximum bandwidth to 18 Gbps where the previous version ( HDMI 1.4) has a maximum bandwidth specified at 10.2 Gbps.

The higher bandwidth makes it possible to transfer 4K (UltraHD) content at 50/60 frames per second.

HDMI 2.0 supports 32 audio channels and dynamic lip sync . The latter makes sure that audio and video are in sync, this can be an issue as video processing is usually more intensive than audio processing. Without syncing the sound would be heared before the lips move.

The latest HDMI version also adds new extensions to HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) which makes it possible to for HDMI connected devices to control each other. HDMI CEC might not ring a bell as it usally comes by different names like SimpLink, Anynet+, Bravia Sync or EasyLink.

There's no need for new cables as the bandwidth of HDMI 2.0 can be transferred by current High Speed (category 2)  cables, the new standard will be backwards compatible and also the same connectors are used.
