Hulu Plus streaming hits Nintendo Wii as software dries up

What's a Nintendo Wii owner to do now that software support for the system has all but disappeared? Hulu is hoping they'll use it to watch television. The streaming company has partnered with Nintendo to bring Hulu Plus to the Wii... finally.

Hulu Plus, which landed on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010 and 2011 (respectively), will offer Wii owners current and past seasons of several prime time shows, including "Modern Family, "Family Guy" and "Community." Newbies who want to try before they subscribe can download the Hulu Plus app and watch for free for two weeks.

Despite not appearing sooner on the best-selling game console, the company said the move is better late than never.

"Wii is not only one of the most important entertainment devices in the living room, but one of the most heavily anticipated and requested platforms by users and subscribers," said Pete Distad, VP of Marketing and Distribution at Hulu. "Teaming up with Nintendo gives millions of households across the U.S. an immediate way to access some of their favorite current season shows on-demand in their living room through Hulu Plus."

The subscription-based service is also due out for the handheld Nintendo 3DS later this year.

Though unconfirmed, the team-up will likely continue when Nintendo releases its high-definition Wii U system this fall. The unique tablet-controlled platform will need all the online video support it can get; Nintendo has already dismissed Blu-ray and DVD support. (via Nintendo)
