The iPhone Dev Team issued an Apple iPhone OS 3.0 unlock for users, allowing some owners to use their phone on carriers other than AT&T.
The "ultrasn0w" unlock works on the iPhone and iPhone 3G, however, will not work with the iPhone 3G S, according to developers. This blog post by the iPhone Dev Team announcing the availability of ultrasn0w for iPhone 3G has more than 10,000 comments.
Interested phone owners must first unlock the phone before anyone can jail break it.
The ultrasn0w, redsn0w and Pwnage Tools were all expected to be able to crack the iPhone 3G S before the phone was even released, though members of the iPhone Dev team said they’re developing tools for use with the 3G S. If you’re waiting for an iPhone 3G S jailbreak, reports indicate one is likely on the way.
For example, the "24Kpwn" boomtrom exploit — an unpatchable, unupdatable way to jailbreak phones — is still present in the iPhone 3G S.
"On a personal note, I’m sad," iPhone hacker George Hotz reportedly said. "Apple, it took me a week to break through your new defenses. And to let us reuse an exploit like that; 24kpwn was so 5 months ago. Although I imagine it must have been painful watching the devices roll by on the assembly line, knowing they all had a hole in them and you coudn’t fix it."
Jailbreaking the iPhone has been a popular activity among phone owners for a couple of years now, despite the threat of possibly voiding the phone’s warranty.
Have you unlocked any versions of your iPhone? If not, is it something you’re interested in trying?
