Illegal Windows installation remains illegal after Windows 10 update

Microsoft has revealed more details on its plan to also offer Windows 10 as an update to users with an illegal version of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. After the update Microsoft will continue to flag the Windows installation as illegal.windows-7-not-genuine

Users won't be able to convert their illegal installations to legal versions with an update to Windows 10, according to a statement from Microsoft to Ars Technica. "With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. If a device was considered non-genuine or mis licensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mis licensed after the upgrade."

Microsoft  states it wants to update illegal Windows installations to make sure that also users with an illegal Windows version have the best possible experience. The company likely wants to somehow convince users of an illegal version to purchase a licence.

The measure will, as many update their illegal version of Windows, at least make sure that Windows 7 won't be the next Windows XP. That version of the operating system continues to be used on many computers, even now Microsoft has stopped supporting it.
