Imation introduces wireless USB external HDD

Imation recently introduced a new external Pro WX Wireless USB hard disk drive that offers up to 1.5TB storage capacity, as the company aims to cater towards PC enthusiasts who have to backup information on multiple computers in a single location.

The 3.5-inch HDD has a transfer speed of up to 15MBs/second via USB, and has the ability to transmit up to 30 feet.  It also has one-touch sync and is compatible both with PCs and Macs.

I don't know how high the demand is for wireless HDDs, but with the growing availability of external HDDs that are USB-powered, these HDDs may not sell with high levels of success.  However, the ability to simply plug the wireless dongle into any PC or notebook in range and have access to a physical storage unit is a nice touch, though I'm still curious to hear how many of you would utilize such a technology.

"We are now the first to provide users with a Wireless USB hard drive to continuously back up their most critical data in a unique product design," said James Depuydt, Imation technology director, in a statement.  "We will continue to expand our wireless storage capabilities to enable our customers to easily create, store, manage and share digital information."

The Imation Pro WX is now available with a $549.99 MSRP.

The cost of HDDs has continually fallen the past several quarters, forcing manufacturers to roll out HDDs with specific niche purposes that sometimes cannot be met by regular HDDs.
