Intel today announced the S3500 series SSDs, targeted for use in data centers. The drives use 20 nm NAND and connect to the computer using the SATA-3 interface. Intel specifies sequential read speeds of up to 500 MB/s, sequential write speeds of up to 450 MB/s and a random read performance 75,000 IOPS.
They will be available in capacities ranging from 80 GB to 800 GB with prices of $115,- for the 80 GB drive and $979,- for the 800 GB drive with a 5 year warranty.
Since the drives are intended for usage in data centers they also come with features like data encryption and protection against data loss by built-in capacitors that provide a short period of backup power to the drive allowing it to finish operations in the event of power loss.
