Intel SSD roadmap leaks - 2TB SSDs and 20 nm HET MLC coming

The Chinese website VR-Zone.com leaked an Intel SSD road-map showing 2 TB drives and 20 nm HET MLC. Intel plans to release new consumer drives in the second and third quarter of this year. The roadmap shows the Intel 530 Series SSD which should have been released already. The same models also showed up in a previous roadmap which mentioned that the drives should have been released in the first quarter of 2013.

Since we're now past the second quarter  it seems Intel has its reasons to continue to delay the 530 Series.

The 530 series will be available in several form-factors, a 2.5-inch SATA  variant, a Next Generation Form Factor(NGFF) / M.2 and a mSATA  drive. The  M2 and mSATA drives will be available in capacities of 80 GB, 180 GB, 240 GB, and 360 GB . The 2.5" drives will be available in capacities of  180 GB, 240 GB, 360 GB, and 480 GB.

In the first quarter of 2014 Intel is planning the P3700 series. According to the roadmap these drives should become available in capacities of 200 GB, 400 GB, 800 GB, 1.6 TB and 2 TB. They will use 20 nm HET MLC, Intel's marketing term for eMLC memory. HET means High Endurance Technology, the higher endurance is achieved by cherry picking the best MLC NAND chips and by increasing the page programming cycle.

The roadmap also shows the Intel Pro 1500 series, available in capacities ranging from 80 GB to 480 GB. The 15oo series will have drives in the 2.5", mSATA and NGFF form factors. These drives will use 20 nm MLC NAND and come with a technology called OPAL. This technology includes self encrypting of the drive and other ways of making the computer and the storage device more secure.

As with any roadmap it's subject to changes and it's unclear if these drives will be on schedule or are released at all.
