Is DirecTV designing a Netflix-killer?

Netflix currently holds the reigns of the online streaming TV and movie space. And with around 24 million paying subscribers and highbrow plans to break into original programming , the company is gearing up to compete directly with networks like HBO and Showtime. Several companies have launched alternatives, with more to come.

If a recent survey sent to DirecTV subscribers is any indication, the streaming service arena may soon have yet another contender.

Digital media analyst and avid blogger Dave Zatz was tipped to a DirecTV survey that hints at a possible new fee-based service for current subscribers.

Part of the survey asks respondents to evaluate a "streaming-only Netflix-like service," while another attempts to gauge just how much time customers spend watching content via Netflix each week.

From the survey:

  • The service would allow you to stream thousands of movies and television shows over a broadband internet connection to your television, computer or tablet.
  • The content available would likely be past seasons of current shows as well as older TV series and older movie releases (released more than 5 years ago).
  • You could watch as many programs as you want for one flat monthly fee, similar to what Netflix streaming offers.

These rumblings come just days after Netflix CEO Reed Hastings discussed the strong possibility of DISH Network leveraging its newly-acquired property Blockbuster for its own online movie streaming competitor. (Via Home Media Magazine)
