Japanese project bypasses filters and censorship - with VPNs

A project from the Japanese University of Tsukuba gives access to dozens of free VPN servers. By using these VPNs it's possible to bypass filters from government and ISPs that block access to websites they prefer not to show or are not allowed by law.

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and allows you to create a secure connection to another network over the Internet. They forward all your network  to the network you connect to which makes several of its benefits possible  like accessing local network resources remotely and bypassing internet filters.

With VPN Gate, as the project from the Japanese University is called, you are able to connect to VPNs across the globe for free and with no registration required. This means that in case in your country a certain website is blocked, you can connect to a VPN in another country and then freely browse that website. The traffic to and from the VPN is encrypted which means that others are unable to see what you're doing through the VPN.

Also if you want to hide your identity on the web (often used by spammers to create new accounts with different IPs) you can use a VPN. The website or service that tries to identify you, will see the IP address of the VPN and has no access to the actual IP address of your computer.

The project also allows you to let your computer serve as a VPN for which you can subscribe here. If you want to use a VPN then you need to download SoftEther VPN, an open-source VPN application for which VPN Gate is a plugin. More information can be found on the VPN Gate website.
