Kingston debuts 32GB MicroSDHC card

Kingston has added a new high-capacity microSD card to their lineup that will enable consumers to store greater amounts of media in their portable devices.

The company put out a press release on Wednesday announcing the 32GB microSDHC Class 4 card, which will be available with an SD, MiniSD adapter, or a small USB reader.

"The need for additional portable storage has grown as the mobile phone has transitioned from a simple voice device to a powerful multifunctional tool which is used to email, listen to music, take photos and watch movies," said Mike Kuppinger, Flash card product manager for Kingston. "Mobile phones are about more than just staying in touch as we also use them to take pictures at our kids' sporting events, shoot videos on vacation and post to social media sites. An extra 32GB of expandable memory takes these capabilities even further."

The company says that the card will be capable of holding approximately 2000 minutes of video, 6000 songs, and 29,000 digital images, but of course the actual amount will depend upon file sizes. The specifications do state that the 32GB capacity will hold 19,040 5MP pictures and 28,928 3MP pictures in standard JPEG format.

Flash memory has been notorious for incompatibility issues every time companies release larger capacity cards, however Kingston says that they have tested this one with several smartphones.

“The card has worked flawlessly when tested on the latest crop of smartphones including the HTC Evo™ 4G and Shadow™; Motorola Droid™ X; RIM (BlackBerry®) Bold™ 9000; and, Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant™,” the press release states.

Kingston has set the MSRP for the 32GB microSDHC card alone at $153.00. With an SD adapter the price rises a bit to $155.00, and it will be $159.00 for the card plus two adapters or a USB reader. All will begin shipping on October 11th.

I don’t keep enough media on my phone to come even close to filling one of these cards, but I’m sure there are people out there who do. One might be better off, however, purchasing two 16GB microSDHC cards, which can be found for under $40 at several retailers.
