Kodak Playsport video camera first impressions

One of the most interesting gadgets that we checked out at CES this year was the Kodak Playsport video camera. This device is a new competitor in the now popular ultra-compact camcorder space, rivaling the likes of the Flip, the Creative Vado and the recently announced Sony "bloggie", among others.

So what makes the Kodak Playsport stand out? The Playsport captures video in HD, at 1080p (30 fps) or 720p (30 or 60 fps) resolution. It includes built-in electronic image stabilization and is extremely rugged, with the most interesting feature being that it is waterproof. Want to go for a swim? No problem, the Playsport is designed to go up to 10 feet underwater.

The Playsport is very similar to Kodak's previous flagship ultra-compact camcorder, the Zi8, which was very good. The main difference here is the waterproofing, along with a more compact size. The Playsport fits in your hand well and can be carried around easily in a pocket.

With the waterproofing and the image stabilization, the Playsport seems like a perfect pocket camcorder for outdoor enthusiasts. We can envision it being used often at the beach, the pool, the ski slopes and other areas that would be detrimental to a traditional camera.

Other notable features include 5MP stills (16:9), a 2 inch LCD screen, Li-Ion rechargeable battery, SD card expansion slot, HDMI output and remote control compatible. The Playsport will be available starting in April for $150. A waterproof, compact video camera that shoots 1080p video for $150? Sounds like a winner to me.
