LG androidifies 2 new HDTV sets with Google TV

Google TV did not have a fantastic start despite having some very good ideas about managing multiple types of content. After Logitech dropped their support of Google TV, the future of the concept was left in question. It seems that other partners are emerging who still believe in Google TV and are willing to work it into their sets.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week LG debuted two new TVs which contain both LG’s Smart TV software as well as the Android based Google TV services. The two models that LG is showing off with built in Google TV functionality are the LMG860 and the LMG620.

These two LG sets will allow the user to control Google TV functionality via the “Magic Remote.” The Magic Remote offers a ton of ways to access content including: gesture controls, voice recognition, a spin wheel, and the standard remote buttons. The magic remote was announced back in December but an updated version was debuted at CES alongside these fancy new TVs.

Both sets with Google TV appear to have 3D functionality and utilize LED displays. The sets are going to be available in 47 inch and 55 inch sizes. The press releases, both for the remote and the TVs, don’t detail release dates or prices. Language from the TV and remote descriptions indicate that the Magic Remote will be included with the Google TV enabled sets, but there’s no information about what sets will be able to take advantage of the extra functionality of the snazzy remote.

Do you still have any interest in Google TV? Do you think that by partnering up with companies like LG, Samsung and others that the technology has a chance of becoming more mainstream? Let us know what you think in the comments.
